How to Buy a Car in New Zealand
Are you planning a long holiday in New Zealand? With car rentals at approximately $40 per day and campervans at over $80 per day, you may consider buying a car as a more affordable alternative.
For example, my husband and I purchased a 1988 Mazda Capella 626 for $1800 in March 2008. We spent an additional $200 on check ups and an oil change as well as $22 per month for two months on insurance. We sold the car for $1600 at a difference of $422. Therefore, the total spent was approximately $7 per day.
You can find a car to purchase at a car auction or online at www.TradeMe.com. Car auctions are located throughout the country in big cities, such as the Hamilton Car Auction outside of Auckland. Make sure to test drive the cars in your price range and get a mechanical check-up before you purchase. Also, make sure you have New Zealand dollars on hand since it is rare that they accept credit cards. It is possible to withdraw cash from a local New Zealand bank.
Insurance is easy to obtain. Check the phone book for car insurance listings in New Zealand and call a few insurance companies to compare prices. Make sure you have an address in New Zealand that you can disclose to the car insurance company for mailings or other correspondence. They will also ask about your driving record and driver’s license information. You do not need a New Zealand driver’s license, just a current license from your home state.
When it’s time to sell, simply post a listing on www.TradeMe.com with photos and detailed information about the vehicle. If you do not have time to sell your car, take it back to the auction and they will sell it for you for a small fee then wire you the payment. Either way, with an extended holiday in New Zealand, buying instead of renting a car will save you money.

Paramount Pictures 90th Anniversary Memorable Scores $12.35 Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio’s musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its … |

The Piano $11.99 Jane Campion’s The Piano struck a deep chord (if you’ll excuse the expression) with audiences in 1993, who were mesmerized by the film’s rich, dreamlike imagery.
